The

Burlington Society
Burlington Society Logo

We're an independently funded social society based at Universities in Manchester whose aim is to fill the social activity void which can open up once people fall outside the undergraduate social scene. Our members are postgrads, mature students, and some postdocs and research assistants. We even have a few university alumni!

We support our members in putting on social events to help each other survive the stresses of academia, even if this is just by giving you an excuse to take a break from studies and get out of labs and libraries once in a while with like minded people! Our meetings are currently in Kro Bar on Thursday nights during term times — check out our upcoming events on the left, or use the links above to find out more about our society.

Society News

10th November 14: Don't forget to check us out on facebook!

We're a little short on volunteers at the moment, so a lot of our events planning will happen on facebook instead of this site. Join our facebook group to keep up to date!

12th November 13: Notice of Society AGM!

We will be holding our society general meeting in Kro Bar, 325 Oxford Road, M13 9PG at 8pm on 28 November 2013. We'll elect the new society committee at the AGM — Nominations are still being accepted, so if you are interested standing for chair, treasurer, vice-chair: co-ordination or vice-chair: events, now is the time to speak up!

More information about the Society Officer Positions:

Here are the vacant Committee positions to be elected 28 Nov, all with a time commitment of about 2 hours per week. Any questions just ask!

  • Chair: Keep the rest of the committee in line by prioritising what we discuss at our monthly meetings, oversee the society reserve fund, and act as our official figurehead...
  • Treasurer: Keep track of all the money and tell the other officers how much is available each term, then let them fight over it like hungry dogs. Draw up reports of expenditure for the Inland Revenue and funding bodies.
  • Vice-chair Events: bid for a budget for events each term, and then organise which volunteers* get to run events, on which dates, and with what budgets!
  • Vice-chair Co-ordination: bid for a budget for publicity and assets each term, and then co-ordinate which volunteers* are doing all the society's admin and publicity!

*sometimes volunteers may need to be plied with favours and promises before they step forward...

Once business is concluded, we'll have a general social!

17th December 12: Society Relaunch!

We're well and truly ready to get the Burlington show back on the road as an independently funded society! Our major change is that we are now putting the resources of the society in the hands of you, the members. Always had a good idea for an event and wanted to try running it? Come along and talk to us and there may well be money in the budget to get it off the ground!
